Tension and Trauma Release Exercises (TRE)

Our bodies have a physical, not just a psychological response to threat. Although psychotherapy can facilitate emotional release, it cannot facilitate the physiological release necessary to discharge stress and trauma. Dr. Berceli wanted to empower people to heal themselves and developed TRE to do just that. TRE is a body based (somatic) process which, when done properly, through a Certified TRE Provider can allow the individual to discharge tension from the body, which often does not require “revisiting the story”. (ie: verbally describing or talking about the traumatic experience)
TRE is easy to learn. It is a simple technique that helps releases stress, tension from the body that accumulate from every day circumstances of life, from prolonged overwhelming situations, (e.g. anxiety, depression), or traumatic life experiences (i.e., compassion fatigue, natural disasters, social or domestic violence, PTSD).
TRE consists of simple exercises that safely activate a natural reflex mechanism of shaking, also called “neurogenic tremors“, or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system. When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance.
How do the tremors restore the body to a calm relaxed state?
The tremors turn down the central nervous system’s automated and hyper-aroused fight or flight or freeze response by creating a vibration of contraction and relaxation that releases the built up energy and tension held in the muscles and connective tissues of the body. While this shaking is the body’s innate response to calm down the body when it is traumatised or overexcited, it is often seen as a sign of weakness and there for suppressed, leaving the body held in a chronically stressed and tense state.
The tremors release the traumatic experience in the same way that it was created in the body — by the brain-stem initiating a discharge of the physical tension associated with the event. The Trauma Release Exercises are designed to invoke the tremors from the deepest core muscle of the body (that flexes us forward into defensive and defeated postures) before spreading throughout the rest of the body.

The first time you meet your Certified Provider, you get to learn the exercises and how to self-regulate them so you can use them on your own at home later on. We adjust the technique according to your body’s capacity, if you have any physical limitations. I support you in your process and guide you in allow your body to gently release stress and tension. It is recommended that you attend 3 sessions; in each session I am able to work with you at your pace, to deepen your experience. I work with you until you are fully confident is using this as the amazing self help tool that it is.
